How on earth does someone manage to miss a race which is uniformed with colour coded swimming caps?

It’s 4am on Sunday, I’m awake and I’m on the road.  It’s not often that I’m up before the sun but I’m excited.  I’m on my way to Raby Bay to compete in my second ever triathlon.  Let me set the record straight, it is a baby triathlon…400m swim, 5km bike ride and 2km run…I’m not that fit!

My heat is due to start at exactly 7:13am, so for the next hour after transition closes I hang out with all the cool kids in the toilet line dreaming of the coffee I haven’t had.

It gets to 6:55am and the heats have started so I take this opportunity to run up and have a look at the bike transition so I know where I’ll need to run in and out.  Once I’ve checked this out I stroll back to the water thinking I still have a few minutes to kill (keep in mind that I have no watch – mistake!).  I get to the water and what do I see, silver caps floating in the water (every heat has a different colour – most probably to avoid the following…). I run over to one of the officials and ask for the time, she confirms that it is in fact 7:13…the sound of the race gun blasts.  My race is underway as I clumsily run down the jetty.  I see that the next heat is full of 30 young guys and I consider the possibility of starting with them…the race official shakes her head and tells me to jump in and start before the boys. So I’m off…giving a great imitation of a flailing dog, all the while my head is racing with thoughts of how on earth someone manages to miss a race which is uniformed with colour coded swimming caps.

Got to love a Sunday sleep in….but how about his view?!

Life…In the words of my 19-year-old self

I found this on my Tumblr…apparently I was pretty keen on giving inspirational speeches back in the day.

LIFE is yours to do with what you want.  It is a journey filled with so many WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITIES and often many hard times, perhaps some that we would rather not experience.  But in the end, it is all of these things that make us WHO WE ARE and provide us with a realistic perspective when we take things for granted in our lives.  You get to LIVE THIS LIFE once, so give it all you’ve got and appreciate the smaller things.  Live the life that YOU love and love the life that YOU live. It is only you who can MAKE YOUR LIFE WHAT YOU WANT IT TO BE.

I know that these are things we have all heard before, but sometimes when we get caught up and stressed in our day to day lives it’s nice to be reminded of the amazing potential that every single person in the world is born with.  Happy Wednesday everyone, I hope that your week finishes on an awesome high even if it has been a tough one to get through for whatever reason.  Don’t forget to smile. ❤

Wisdom imparted by Calvin Coolidge

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.  Talent will not; nothing is more common than successful people with talent.  Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.  Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.  Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.  The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

-Calvin Coolidge

Work it!

Today was my first day back at the gym…I died a bit! It’s crazy how quickly you lose fitness and forget how wonderful you feel afterwards!

I would love to get my exercise done in the morning but getting up at 4:45am (before my 7am start at work) sounds like a MASSIVE headache in the making!!! I’m sure I’ll get there one day…maybe it will get easier with age!?

Happy training all and try not to be disheartened if you’ve gone backwards a little bit! Making the effort with your health should be a lifestyle not a fad and it sure is a great adventure!

Design…a valuable skill

One of my subjects this last semester was Media, Design & Layout.  I’m not going to lie I wasn’t overly excited about the subject, not because I’m uninterested in learning new skills but I’m well aware (or at least I thought I was) of my ‘artistic’ abilities and there limits.

This subject has taught me how to use two programs, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop.  After many frustrated encounters I actually learnt to enjoy it…using different colours, fonts and general editing tools to create my final folio.  The final result is not perfect but for a newbie I’m very proud of my efforts…fingers crossed my marker is.

Here are two pages from my submission:Image
