Make safety your family’s priority this Easter

On Friday morning I met Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey and QLD Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Lee Johnson. They have an important Easter safety message for Queensland families:

The Importance of Still Frames: A little bit sentimental…

What is it about photographs that are so important to us? For me, it is a memory.  A memory of a time, place, event or person that has somehow impacted my life and made me who I am today.

I’ve never particularly liked being in photos, but I guess the creation of a camera/phone in which you can capture ‘selfies’  has made it easier for people to feel confident in capturing lifes special moments. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with the odd ‘selfie’, don’t we all have the right to like how we look in pictures? After all, with the creation of social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook the photos are documented in a way which I’m sure is likely to out last us entirely.

I think the moment I realised what I was missing out on in doing my best to avoid photos, was when I was 16 and my dad died.  I have a total of 10 photographs in which both my dad and myself are the subjects. Out of those 10, the oldest I am in any of them is about 11 years old.  The hard thing about this, is as I get older the memories that are going to stick around are going to be the ones captured by pictures.  To be honest, most of the pictures I have reflect memories that I was too young to even remember.

Lesson learnt…now, I’m a serial Instagramer.

Today I have printed out a whole stack of photos; a reflection of my life in the year 2012 (as this is when I first got Instagram) and I have decided that I am going to attempt to create a book which I will add to each year with photos and memories.  I understand this concept is nothing new to many people but I’m looking forward to creating a journal which I can look back on in years to come when I’m getting old and wrinkly so I can remember all the good times I have had.

For those of you out there who don’t like to be in photos, challenge yourself! Jump into the photo, you never know how much that might mean to someone else in years to come.  After all life goes by so quickly, isn’t it always lovely to look back on photos from 10 years ago and remember?! Chances are you’ll look back on that photo and realise how gorgeous you actually were.
